Do you think you have a growth mindset? Are you sure? Or, are you a person with a fixed mindset? Let’s take a look at the two and then you can decide.
We all are pretty much aware that the view we have of ourselves greatly affects the way we lead our lives. This view can determine if we reach the goals we set for ourselves and accomplish those things that are of value to us. If you believe that you have qualities that are set in stone and there is nothing you can do about these qualities because “that is just the way you are,” you possess a fixed mindset. Some people in this mindset believe they only have a certain amount of smarts, are a certain personality type or only possess a certain amount of character, so they better prove they have a good amount of these characteristics, time-and-time again! You see this is the sales profession as well as leaders who believe they need to have all the answers, all the time. A person with a fixed mindset does not want to appear as if they are not intelligent or that they are not good enough.
A person with a growth mindset believes that their basic qualities can be developed and cultivated over time through their own efforts. They firmly believe they can change and grow through applying themselves and the experiences they gain. The hunger and desire to stretch themselves and stick to this approach, even when things get tough, is the trademark of a person with the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to prosper and succeed during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
So, do you have a growth mindset? I hope so. Take a look at the way you approach certain situations. Afraid of looking unintelligent? Why not look at that situation as what you can learn and how you can draw from this experience in the future? That is the growth mindset approach.
Here is wishing you growth, in all aspects of your life, in 2019.
